VOULIAGMENI, GREECE, Sept. 23 (World Daily Times) — Greek police arrested a 76-year-old man after an 82-year-old man died following a physical confrontation over beach loungers at Vouliagmeni beach, south of Athens. Prosecutors have described the reported charge against the older man as causing fatal bodily harm. The case remains under investigation, and the defendant has not been found guilty.

The names of the two men have not been released in the available records. The specific court and judge handling the case also have not been identified.

What happened?

The confrontation took place before 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026, at a beach resort in Vouliagmeni, a coastal area on the Athenian Riviera. Greek police said the men argued over beach loungers. Accounts differ over whether one lounger, two loungers or a larger group of loungers was involved.

The argument became physical. During the confrontation, the 82-year-old suffered cardiac arrest and collapsed, according to accounts attributed to witnesses and emergency responders. Bystanders, including a nurse according to one account, attempted to revive him. CPR and a defibrillator were reportedly used before he was taken by ambulance to Asklepieion Hospital in Voula.

Hospital information reported by Greek media said the man died at about 11 a.m. A postmortem examination was ordered to establish the precise cause of death. The available information does not show whether the fatal injury resulted from the physical confrontation, the cardiac arrest or another medical cause. That question is part of the investigation.

Who was arrested?

Greek police arrested the 76-year-old man. He is accused of causing fatal bodily harm, a description of the charge used in reports about the case. The accusation is not a finding of guilt.

Police also detained a 21-year-old woman who was with the man. She was later released, according to police-related accounts. Reports have described the allegations against her differently, including aiding and abetting, verbal abuse, insult and threats. The available records do not establish the final form of any charges against her.

The manager of the beach resort was also detained for questioning. The available information does not indicate that the manager was charged.

Why do accounts of the fight differ?

The sequence of events has not been settled publicly. Some accounts say the 76-year-old struck the 82-year-old. Other accounts say the 82-year-old struck or slapped the woman, leading to a response from the older man. In an account reported by To Vima, the 76-year-old said the 82-year-old hit him and that he then fainted.

That statement is the defendant’s account, not an established fact. Police and prosecutors are expected to assess witness statements, medical evidence and other evidence gathered at the scene.

What happens next?

The 76-year-old man and the 21-year-old woman were scheduled to appear before a judge on Sept. 23 after receiving additional time, according to reports about the case. The available records do not confirm whether that hearing took place, whether either person remained in custody or whether the allegations were changed.

The postmortem and the police investigation are central to determining how the death occurred and what responsibility, if any, each person may bear. Until prosecutors and the court resolve those questions, the charges remain allegations.
