WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 (Infinite Headlines) — The White House has asked Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece, to resign, press secretary Katie Zacharia said at an Oct. 13, 2026, briefing. Zacharia did not say Guilfoyle had resigned.
“She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well,” Zacharia said.
President Donald Trump told reporters Oct. 12 that he was considering firing Guilfoyle and was unhappy. The preceding Friday, he said he had “just heard a little bit” about the alleged conduct. Vice President JD Vance said Friday he would withhold judgment about possible consequences.
POLITICO reported allegations that Guilfoyle urged a donor seeking White House access to pay a $100,000 credit-card bill before her 2025 Senate confirmation hearing. Trump donor Eric Deters accused her of seeking that payment in exchange for access, SAN reported. SAN also reported accusations involving a Greek official and improper gifts or services.
Guilfoyle’s lawyers denied wrongdoing, saying the money was owed for speaking engagements and consulting work. They said accounts of her travel were misleading and that she complied with federal gift and reporting requirements.
Reuters reported lawmakers’ concerns about an alleged threat to undermine the Greek government.
NBC News reported, citing two unnamed people familiar with the decision, that Guilfoyle and the embassy were under investigation by the State Department’s Office of Inspector General. CNN separately reported an investigation, citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter.
An unnamed official told ABC News the inspector general was examining possible misconduct but could not establish whether a formal probe had begun. The Associated Press also reported scrutiny, citing an unnamed official.
CNN reported that Trump had been weighing dismissal, citing an unnamed person familiar. ABC News reported leadership discussions about possible dismissal, citing two unnamed people. AP reported, citing a senior U.S. official, that Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were angry and might decide her future that week.
The U.S. Embassy in Greece said Guilfoyle followed State Department ethics and gift-reporting guidelines. In a statement to The Wall Street Journal, it defended her integrity and commitment to representing Americans.
Trump appointed Guilfoyle as envoy to Athens in December 2024, the BBC reported. She began serving as ambassador in 2025, NBC News reported.
