LONDON, Oct. 3 (Infinite Headlines) — A dual British-Iranian national arrested in a terrorism investigation concerning RAF Fairford has been released on bail, The Washington Post reported, citing an announcement by authorities on Saturday, Oct. 3.
Counter Terrorism Policing said the man was arrested in London on Thursday, Oct. 1, on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. Police also searched two properties in London.
He was the sixth person arrested and subsequently released on bail in the investigation, Newsday reported. RAF Fairford is a British air force station in England used by U.S. bombers.
Police said five British men in their 20s from the London area were arrested near the base on the preceding Sunday on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offenses. They were later released on bail. NBC News reported that no charges had been filed against those five men at the time of its report.
In an update Tuesday, Counter Terrorism Policing head Laurence Taylor said police had found no explosives or improvised explosive devices in three vans. Officers recovered “a quantity of petrol,” he said.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Wednesday there were “strong indications” of Iranian involvement. That was his assessment, not an established finding. Iran denied involvement.
Addressing the release of the first five suspects, Burnham said Wednesday: “It’s obviously with the strictest possible bail conditions.”
President Donald Trump criticized the decision to grant those men bail, saying, “I wouldn’t have done that.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said many people were “disturbed” by the decision.
ABC News Australia also reported that another British man was questioned under caution.
