ATHENS, Greece, July 21 (World Daily Times) — Athens police detained a 60-year-old man after they said he stabbed a Greek-American couple near the Acropolis archaeological site on Monday morning, leaving both tourists with injuries officials said were not life-threatening.

Police said the attack happened around 8:05 a.m. near the southern entrance to the site, opposite the Acropolis Museum and ticket booths. A passerby alerted authorities after seeing a man with a knife threatening people nearby, according to police accounts.

Officers from the DIAS motorcycle unit and an EKAV ambulance reached the scene quickly, gave first aid and took the injured couple to a hospital in Athens. Police said the man suffered the more serious wound, while the woman was hurt less severely.

Authorities described the couple as Greek-American tourists. They did not identify the suspect, and police said the motive was not immediately clear. The man was detained at the scene and was expected to appear before a prosecutor later Tuesday.
